The MV Hondius, a cruise ship carrying 150 people, is set to dock in Tenerife, Canary Islands, on Saturday, despite local government protests. The ship has been associated with a hantavirus outbreak, which has raised concerns about public health as it approaches Spain. The cruise ship had been stranded off the coast of Cape Verde after the virus was detected onboard. Reports indicate that three passengers have died due to the outbreak, and three others, including a British man, were evacuated to the Netherlands after displaying symptoms of the virus while aboard. The MV Hondius departed from Argentina, a country that the World Health Organization (WHO) ranks as having the highest incidence of hantavirus in Latin America. Argentine officials are currently investigating the origins of the outbreak and are working on contact tracing to determine the source of contamination. There are also reports that some passengers from the cruise have already returned to their home countries, which complicates the tracing efforts. The situation has prompted significant concern among health officials, as the hantavirus is a rare, rodent-borne disease. The Spanish health ministry has confirmed the ship's expected arrival in the Canary Islands within three to four days, emphasizing the need for careful monitoring and response to the health risks posed by the outbreak.
