Spain has reported a new case of hantavirus involving a passenger who was evacuated from the MV Hondius, a cruise ship that experienced an outbreak of the virus. The infected individual is among more than 120 passengers and crew members who were evacuated from the ship, according to the Spanish ministry. The MV Hondius, which is Dutch-flagged, docked in Spain's Canary Islands on a Sunday, where the evacuation of passengers took place via repatriation flights (France24, Euronews, The Hindu). The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed a total of six hantavirus cases linked to the MV Hondius. Following the evacuation, one of the 17 American passengers tested positive for the hantavirus but is reportedly not showing any symptoms, as stated by U.S. health officials. Another passenger developed symptoms during the flight home (Deutsche Welle, The Hindu). The evacuation of the MV Hondius was conducted under the supervision of Spanish authorities, who prepared to receive the ship and its passengers. The ship was escorted by a Civil Guard vessel upon its arrival at the port of Granadilla (The Hindu). The situation has highlighted significant differences in public health protocols between the United States and Europe regarding the handling of passengers from the hantavirus-affected ship (France24).
