In April 2025, the Main Marmara Fault in northwestern Türkiye experienced its largest earthquake in over 60 years, with a magnitude of 6.2, as analyzed in a study published in Science by a team led by Prof. Dr. Patricia Martínez-Garzón. The research indicates an eastward progression of seismic activity towards Istanbul, based on nearly two decades of seismic data.
