Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has summoned Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to the Pentagon for discussions regarding the military's use of Anthropic's AI model, Claude. Hegseth has threatened to designate Anthropic as a "supply chain risk" if the ongoing negotiations do not progress. The Pentagon is reportedly close to severing ties with Anthropic due to frustrations over the company's restrictions on the use of its AI technology, particularly concerning ethical guidelines that prohibit the application of Claude for violent purposes, weapon development, or surveillance activities. The Wall Street Journal reported that the Pentagon utilized Claude during a military operation aimed at capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, which resulted in significant military action in Caracas and the deaths of 83 individuals, according to Venezuela’s defense ministry. This use of Claude raises ethical concerns, as it contradicts Anthropic's terms of use. The Pentagon is negotiating with four AI companies, including Anthropic, to allow military use of their tools for "all lawful purposes," but the dispute with Anthropic centers on whether Claude can be employed for contentious applications such as mass domestic surveillance and autonomous weaponry. Discussions regarding the extension of Anthropic's contract have stalled, with delays attributed to additional safeguards that Anthropic wishes to implement on Claude. These safeguards are intended to prevent the AI's use in certain applications that have become contentious in military operations. The situation reflects broader tensions between the military's operational needs and the ethical guidelines set by AI developers, highlighting the challenges faced in balancing these interests. If the contract discussions do not progress, the Pentagon may take further action against Anthropic, emphasizing the urgency of resolving these issues.
