On May 4, 1976, the Laser Geodynamics Satellite (LAGEOS), a two-foot-wide (60-centimeter) sphere resembling a disco ball, entered orbit approximately 3,700 miles (6,000 kilometers) above Earth. The satellite is covered with 426 retroreflectors, which are small mirrored prisms designed to reflect laser light directly back to its source.
