Ukraine plans to acquire up to 20 latest model Gripen jet fighters, with funding sourced from the European Union’s Ukraine Support Loan, amounting to €2.5 billion ($2.9 billion). This acquisition marks a significant enhancement of Ukraine's military capabilities, as the Gripen jets are considered modern combat aircraft that Ukraine aims to integrate into its defense strategy. The announcement was made by Stockholm, indicating a collaborative effort to bolster Ukraine's defense amid ongoing hostilities. In addition to the purchase of new Gripen jets, Sweden is set to donate 16 older models to Ukraine. This donation is expected to occur sooner than initially planned, providing immediate support to Ukraine in its ongoing conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of these jets, stating, “We need these jets, and for us this is really a new page for Ukraine.” This statement underscores the urgency and significance of the acquisition for Ukraine's defense needs. Despite having developed a system for intercepting long-range drones, which has gained attention from some of the world's most advanced militaries, Ukraine remains largely reliant on its Western allies to counter Russian missile attacks. The acquisition of the Gripen jets represents a pivotal enhancement to Ukraine's aerial defense capabilities, addressing critical needs in the face of ongoing military challenges.
