Ukraine to acquire up to 20 Gripen fighter jets, on track to receive batch of older models  

Ukraine plans to acquire up to 20 Gripen fighter jets, with funding sourced from the European Union’s Ukraine Support Loan, amounting to €2.5 billion ($2.9 billion). This announcement was made by Stockholm, indicating a significant step in Ukraine's military capabilities. The Gripen jets are considered more modern combat aircraft, which Ukraine aims to integrate into its defense strategy. In addition to the purchase of new Gripen jets, Sweden is set to donate 16 older models to Ukraine. This donation is expected to occur sooner than initially planned, providing Ukraine with immediate support in its ongoing conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed the importance of these jets, stating, “We need these jets, and for us this is really a new page for Ukraine.” This highlights the urgency and significance of the acquisition for Ukraine's defense needs. Ukraine's military strategy has been heavily reliant on Western allies to counter Russian missile attacks. Despite having developed a system for intercepting long-range drones, which has garnered attention from advanced militaries worldwide, the need for advanced fighter jets remains critical.
