OpenAI has officially launched an advertising pilot in ChatGPT, allowing certain users to see ads during their interactions with the AI chatbot. This initiative is currently available to users on the free version of ChatGPT and those subscribed to the $8 per month Go plan. Ads will appear as labeled "sponsored" links at the bottom of ChatGPT's responses, and OpenAI has stated that these advertisements will not influence the chatbot's answers. Users on higher-tier plans, such as Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education, will not see any ads unless they opt for the Plus subscription, which costs at least $20 per month (The Verge, Engadget). OpenAI aims to use these ads to support broader access to enhanced ChatGPT features while maintaining user trust. The company has emphasized that conversations will remain private from advertisers, and users have the option to disable personalization and clear data used for ads whenever they choose. Ads will not be displayed when users are discussing sensitive topics, including health, mental wellbeing, or politics (Euronews, Engadget). The advertising pilot is part of OpenAI's strategy to generate revenue from its popular chatbot, which is necessary for covering development costs and business growth. OpenAI expects that ads will contribute less than half of its long-term revenue (The Verge). The company is currently testing this feature to gather feedback and ensure a positive user experience (Engadget).
