A study led by researchers at the University of Oxford has revealed that the shape and orientation of coastlines affected extinction patterns for marine species over the last 540 million years. Animals residing on convoluted or east-west oriented coastlines, like those in the Mediterranean and Gulf of Mexico, faced a higher extinction risk compared to those on north-south oriented coastlines.
