Adobe initially announced plans to discontinue Adobe Animate, stating that it would stop selling the animation software on March 1, 2026. The company cited the emergence of new platforms that better serve user needs as the reason for this decision. Users were informed that they would have until March 1, 2027, or March 1, 2029 for enterprise customers, to access and download files from Animate, as these would no longer be available after those dates. Adobe also indicated that the app would be available for download until those deadlines and that support would continue during that period. However, following significant backlash from users, Adobe reversed its decision. The company announced that Adobe Animate will not be discontinued as previously planned. Instead, it will enter "maintenance mode," meaning that while it will not receive new features, it will continue to receive ongoing security and bug fixes. Adobe stated that it has "no plans to discontinue or remove access" to the app, which remains available for both new and existing users. The change in Adobe's stance came after many creators expressed frustration and disappointment over the initial discontinuation announcement. Adobe Animate has a long history, dating back to its launch by FutureWave Software in 1996, and continues to be used by various creators, including David Firth, known for the animated web series "Salad Fingers."
