NASA's Van Allen Probe A, which launched in 2012 to map Earth's radiation shields, re-entered Earth's atmosphere in March 2026, returning years ahead of schedule. The spacecraft spent seven years studying the belts of charged particles around the planet. Its early descent was caused by the Sun, not a malfunction or mission decision, leading to most of it burning up upon re-entry.
