Uber has launched a robotaxi service in Las Vegas, utilizing autonomous electric vehicles (EVs) from Motional, specifically the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Passengers requesting rides through UberX, Uber Electric, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric may be matched with a Motional robotaxi. Riders are not obligated to accept a robotaxi; they will be notified of the option and can choose a traditional ride instead. To increase their chances of being matched with a robotaxi, riders can opt in through the Ride Preferences section in the Uber app. The autonomous rides will allow passengers to unlock the vehicle using the Uber app. Inside the robotaxi, audio cues will remind riders to close the door and fasten their seatbelt. Additionally, riders will have access to human support through the app if needed. This service follows a pilot program that began in Las Vegas in 2022, stemming from a 10-year partnership between Uber and Motional. Initially, the service will operate with a safety monitor, which Motional aims to remove by the end of the year. In related developments, Uber is also collaborating with Wayve and Nissan to launch a robotaxi service in Tokyo, expected to begin in late 2026. This program will utilize Nissan Leaf EVs equipped with Wayve’s AI Driver technology, with trained drivers initially behind the wheel to gather data on Tokyo's complex driving conditions. Other companies, including Nuro, are testing autonomous vehicles in Tokyo, highlighting the challenges posed by the city's narrow streets and unique driving patterns.
