NASA's Multi-Angle Imager for Aerosols (MAIA) mission is conducting a detailed study of air pollution in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. The mission employs 10 air sensors strategically placed throughout the city to monitor air quality. These sensors are specifically designed to measure particulate matter that is 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter, commonly referred to as PM2.5. This type of particulate matter is recognized as one of the deadliest forms of air pollution globally. The data collected by the MAIA sensors will provide one of the most comprehensive assessments of air pollution in Addis Ababa to date. Over the course of three years, the sensors will gather extensive information on the levels of PM2.5, which poses significant health risks to the population. The deployment of these sensors is part of a broader effort to understand and address air quality issues in urban environments. The MAIA air sensors are roof-mounted, allowing them to capture accurate readings of the air quality in various locations across the city. This initiative highlights NASA's commitment to utilizing advanced technology to monitor environmental conditions and improve public health outcomes. The findings from this mission may inform future policies and interventions aimed at reducing air pollution in Addis Ababa and similar urban areas.
