On Friday morning, Mount Dukono, located on Indonesia's eastern Halmahera island, erupted at approximately 7:40 AM, resulting in the deaths of three hikers. The fatalities include two foreign nationals and one resident of Ternate island, as confirmed by police chief Erlichson Pasaribu of the North Halmahera district. The eruption produced an ash cloud that reached about 10 kilometers (six miles) into the air, prompting immediate rescue efforts for those affected. As of the latest reports, seven hikers have safely descended from the mountain, while ten others remain unaccounted for. The Indonesian authorities are actively engaged in rescue operations to locate and evacuate these missing climbers. The situation has drawn attention not only locally but also internationally, as it has been reported that among the deceased are two Singaporeans. The urgency of the rescue efforts is underscored by the number of hikers still on the mountain, with reports indicating that approximately 20 hikers are involved in the ongoing rescue operation.
