Waymo is asking DoorDash drivers to shut the doors of its self-driving cars

Waymo is currently running a pilot program in Atlanta that involves DoorDash drivers, referred to as DoorDashers, being paid to close the doors of its self-driving cars. This initiative was prompted by the issue that if a passenger accidentally leaves a Waymo vehicle's door open, the car cannot proceed and can become stuck in place. To address this, Waymo has confirmed that it is compensating DoorDash drivers for this task, ensuring that there is someone available to close the doors when necessary. According to reports, DoorDashers are offered a guaranteed fee of $6.25 for closing a Waymo vehicle's door, with an additional $5 provided after they verify that the task has been completed. This payment structure is designed to ensure competitive and fair compensation for the drivers participating in the program. The program began earlier this year, and it aims to enhance the efficiency of Waymo's fleet by addressing the problem of open doors. Waymo's collaboration with DoorDash is framed as a practical solution to a logistical challenge faced by its self-driving vehicles. The company has stated that the notification system alerts nearby DoorDash drivers when a vehicle's door is ajar, allowing them to respond quickly and ensure the vehicle can continue its operation without delays.
