Lionsgate Studios has appointed Steven T. Mnuchin, the former United States Secretary of the Treasury, to its board of directors effective immediately. Mnuchin served as the 77th Treasury Secretary under President Donald Trump from 2017 to 2021. In addition to his role as Treasury Secretary, he was also the Finance Chairman for Trump’s campaign and served as a Senior Economic Advisor. His appointment comes as part of a standstill agreement signed with his investment firm, Liberty 77 Capital, and MHR Fund Management, which is led by studio chairman Mark Rachesky. This agreement aims to ensure that the interests of the involved parties are aligned. Mnuchin has a history in the entertainment industry, having previously worked as a Hollywood producer. His investment firm, Liberty Strategic Capital, has increased its stake in Lionsgate Studios, reaching 12.6% as of May 2025. This significant ownership position likely influenced his appointment to the board, as it reflects a deeper financial commitment to the company. The addition of Mnuchin to the board is expected to bring a blend of financial expertise and industry experience to Lionsgate. His background in both government and finance may provide valuable insights as the studio navigates its future strategies and operations.
