A recent study published in the journal Nature Communications warns that climate change will create difficulties for cold water fish species, including polar cod, in this century. As the ocean heats up and sea ice thaws, new regions are exposed, altering light conditions and reducing food availability when fish need it most. Under Arctic sea ice, fish and plankton live in darkness, with ice floes blocking sunlight, particularly when covered by snow.
