Indonesian village at risk of being swallowed by 100-metre-deep sinkhole

South China Morning Post2/5/2026

Summary

A 100-metre-deep sinkhole is gradually consuming part of a village in northwestern Indonesia. Local farmers are having difficulty expanding their farmland due to the advancing crater, which has grown from approximately 27,000 square metres to 30,000 square metres. Staff from the state electricity company are concerned that the sinkhole may reach a high-voltage transmission tower.
