Jordan were presenting the award for best visual effects to "Avatar: Fire and Ash" when the N-word was shouted. Lindo stated that he and Jordan “did what we had to do” in response to the situation. The incident has drawn significant attention and controversy. The outburst came from John Davidson, a Tourette syndrome campaigner, who was present at the ceremony. Davidson's involuntary shouting included strong language, which led BAFTA host Alan Cumming to apologize to the audience on two occasions. Cumming thanked the audience for their understanding amid the interruptions caused by Davidson's tics. Davidson is the subject of the biopic "I Swear," which highlights his life and advocacy for those with Tourette syndrome. Following the backlash from the incident, Davidson expressed that he is “deeply mortified” if anyone perceives his involuntary tics as intentional. He emphasized his commitment to supporting and empowering the Tourette’s community and promoting empathy and understanding. Davidson also mentioned in an interview that he believes the BBC could have done more to prevent the racial slur from being broadcast during the ceremony.
