Negotiators from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States began a second round of US-brokered peace talks in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. The discussions follow a “productive” first day, as described by Kyiv’s lead negotiator, Rustem Umerov. The primary focus of the talks is to achieve practical steps toward peace and potentially facilitate a prisoner exchange. The ongoing conflict, which has persisted for nearly four years, remains Europe’s deadliest since World War II, with the fate of territory in eastern Ukraine being a significant sticking point in negotiations (France24, Deutsche Welle). On the same day as the talks commenced, a Russian drone strike in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals. This incident occurred just hours before the negotiators entered the peace discussions, highlighting the ongoing violence amid diplomatic efforts (France24). Previous rounds of diplomacy between Ukraine and Russia have not succeeded in reaching a resolution to the conflict, which has caused extensive casualties and destruction (France24). The trilateral meetings in Abu Dhabi are part of a broader effort to bring an end to the hostilities. Despite the challenges, the Ukrainian delegation is advocating for “a just and lasting peace” as they engage in discussions with their Russian counterparts (France24). The talks are expected to continue for two days, with updates on developments being closely monitored (South China Morning Post, Deutsche Welle).
