U.S. officials have accused Wanying Zhang, a California woman, of spying for China by surveilling the son of Taiwan's president, Lai Ching-te. Zhang was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport just before she was set to depart for China. The FBI has stated that she utilized tradecraft to avoid detection and did not inform U.S. authorities that she was acting on behalf of a foreign government. According to the Justice Department, Zhang traveled to Seattle in 2025 under the direction of Chinese officials. During her time there, she allegedly gathered and sent sensitive information, including photos and videos of President Lai's son and his family, as well as their license plate information, to Chinese officials. This activity has raised significant concerns regarding espionage and foreign interference in U.S. and Taiwanese affairs. The case highlights ongoing tensions between the U.S. and China, particularly regarding issues related to Taiwan. The U.S. has been increasingly vigilant about foreign espionage activities, especially those that target individuals connected to Taiwan's leadership. The arrest of Zhang underscores the complexities of international relations in the region and the potential risks posed by foreign agents operating within the U.S.
