AI startup Manus is set to regain its independence as Meta Platforms unwinds its acquisition of the company. This decision follows a block by Beijing on the US$2 billion deal, which was halted on national security grounds. The unwinding of the deal marks a significant moment in the ongoing decoupling between the United States and China, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence. In a communication to its users, Manus announced that it would delete data generated by “certain users” from December 29, the date when Meta acquired the startup. This action is part of Manus's transition back to independence following the dissolution of the agreement with Meta. The decision to unwind the deal comes more than three months after the initial acquisition attempt, highlighting the complexities and challenges faced by foreign companies seeking to operate in China’s tightly regulated technology sector. The situation underscores the increasing scrutiny and regulatory hurdles that international tech companies encounter when engaging with Chinese firms. The reversal of the acquisition reflects broader geopolitical tensions and the impact of national security considerations on business operations in the AI industry. As Manus prepares to operate independently again, it will navigate the implications of this significant shift in its corporate structure and strategy.
