Tesla has introduced a new feature for the Model Y Premium in the United States and Puerto Rico, allowing vehicle-to-load functionality. This feature enables owners to draw 2.4 kW of power from the car's battery, operating at 120 volts and 20 amps. To access this capability, owners must purchase an $80 adapter, which can be added during the vehicle's configuration or bought separately from the Tesla Shop. However, not all Model Y Premium vehicles are equipped with this capability, as Tesla specifies that the adapter is not universally compatible with every unit. This addition to the Model Y Premium represents a significant enhancement, aligning it with features that have been available in Hyundai electric vehicles for several years. Hyundai EVs offer similar power export capabilities without any additional cost to the consumer, contrasting with Tesla's approach of charging for the necessary accessory. This difference highlights a strategic decision by Tesla to monetize additional features while enhancing the functionality of its vehicles. The introduction of the vehicle-to-load feature for the Model Y Premium reflects Tesla's ongoing efforts to expand the utility of its electric vehicles. By providing owners with the option to use their car's battery power for practical applications, Tesla aims to enhance the overall value and versatility of its offerings in the competitive electric vehicle market.
