Ezra Pound, the widely acknowledged dean of Anglo-American Modernist poetry, was fifty-three years old in the spring of 1939. He had lived in Europe for three decades after leaving the United States in 1908 at the age of twenty-three. Initially, he settled in London, then moved to Paris, and in 1924, he continued his life in Europe.
