Keiko Fujimori is inaugurated as Peru's President following narrow election victory

Keiko Fujimori has been inaugurated as President of Peru following a narrow election victory. Her election is significant as, over the past decade, only three of Peru's Presidents have been elected by popular vote. Fujimori's administration is expected to focus on enhancing security and increasing investment in the country. In her inaugural address, she committed to an "iron-fisted crackdown" on crime, which has raised concerns among critics who fear a return to the authoritarian tactics employed by her father, former President Alberto Fujimori. Critics express skepticism regarding Fujimori's ability to unite the nation, as many Peruvians are wary of her father's controversial legacy. The apprehension surrounding her leadership style stems from the historical context of her father's presidency, which was marked by significant human rights violations and authoritarian measures. This skepticism poses a challenge for Fujimori as she seeks to fulfill her promises and address the pressing issues facing the country. As she assumes office, Fujimori must navigate Peru's geopolitical position amid the rivalry between the United States and China. Her administration will need to balance domestic security concerns with international relations, aiming to maintain Peru's sovereignty while engaging with both Washington and Beijing. The scrutiny of her leadership and policies will be significant as she embarks on her presidency, with many watching closely how she addresses both domestic and international challenges.
