Writing and Re-writing the Legacy of Malcolm X

In 1963, American photographer Richard Avedon captured a set of rare portraits of Malcolm X. In these images, Malcolm X appears unsmiling, with blurred facial features, the rims of his glasses visible, and his eyes receding into dark spaces around their sockets.
