In 2025, at least 4 million salmon died prematurely at Tasmanian fish farms, according to data from the state’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). Approximately 500,000 fish died in November and December as ocean temperatures increased. Scientific studies indicate that Atlantic salmon are negatively impacted when ocean temperatures reach 18C, leading to reduced oxygen levels, liver and kidney damage, decreased appetite, and increased susceptibility to disease.
