The International Criminal Court (ICC) has publicly named two sitting Philippine senators, Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa and Christopher “Bong” Go, as alleged “co-perpetrators” in the crimes against humanity case against former President Rodrigo Duterte. This development has intensified the focus on Manila and heightened the political tensions surrounding Duterte's administration. The ICC's decision is part of a broader investigation into Duterte's controversial drug war, which has been linked to numerous extrajudicial killings. According to documents released by ICC prosecutors, Dela Rosa and Go are among eight current and former officials implicated in the case. The ICC has charged Duterte with three counts of crimes against humanity, alleging his involvement in at least 76 murders during his presidency. The identification of these senators as co-perpetrators marks a significant escalation in the legal challenges facing Duterte and his allies. In addition to Dela Rosa and Go, former Philippine Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II is also named among the officials in the ICC's complaint. The ICC's filings, which were made public on Friday, reflect ongoing scrutiny of the actions taken during Duterte's administration, particularly regarding the violent anti-drug campaign that has drawn international condemnation. The political ramifications of these allegations are likely to reverberate throughout the Philippines, further complicating the already tense political landscape.
