For years, activities on the far side of the Sun, such as sunspot formation, flares, and coronal mass ejections, went largely unobserved until these regions rotated into view. In the late 1900s, scientists developed a technique called helioseismology to analyze sound waves generated by such activities as they echoed through the Sun.
