Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa announced that Syria is entering a new phase of "reconstruction" following the United States' decision to remove the country from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. This removal, which occurred on a Monday, rescinded a designation that had been in place for nearly 47 years and significantly hindered investment in Syria. Al-Sharaa expressed optimism about the future, stating that the lifting of sanctions marks the beginning of a "long and sustainable road" characterized by dignity, revival, and development. He made these remarks during the opening of the 63rd Damascus International Fair. The U.S. State Department also revoked its designation of the al-Nusrah Front, known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), as a global terrorist organization. With this action, only Cuba, Iran, and North Korea remain on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism. Turkish Ambassador to Damascus, Nuh Yilmaz, praised the U.S. decision, asserting that it removes the last obstacle to Syria's integration with the world and is crucial for the country's normalization, stability, and development. He expressed hope that this move would benefit all Syrian people and contribute to regional stability. Al-Sharaa emphasized that Syria is poised to become a "beacon for its economy," serving as a bridge between markets and a center for trade. He highlighted the importance of this new chapter for the nation, suggesting that it would allow Syria to reclaim its position in the international community and foster economic growth. The overall sentiment from Syrian officials and regional allies is one of optimism regarding the future of Syria following these significant policy changes by the United States.
