Morgan Meis, an essayist and critic, discusses three painters—Peter Paul Rubens, as well as others—during an interview with Donovan Hohn for Lapham’s Quarterly. Meis is the author of a trilogy of books that explore the history of art, civilization, and war. In his book, The Drunken Silenus: On Gods, Goats, and the Cracks in Reality (2020), he specifically investigates a painting by Rubens.
